Volunteer
Become a volunteer. Change a life.
Volunteering with the Ellensburg Humane Society is a meaningful way to improve the lives of shelter pets in our community. Spending quality time with animals has a positive and lasting impact on their well-being while they wait for loving homes. We are deeply grateful for the generosity, commitment, and compassion of our volunteers. Their support helps make it possible to care for animals in need and work toward a community where pets are safe, healthy, and valued.
The Ellensburg Humane Society is owned by the City of Ellensburg and operates in partnership with the Yakima Humane Society, which helps manage shelter services through a contract.
Some individuals may complete Court Ordered Community Service hours at the Ellensburg Humane Society. Acceptance depends on the nature of the offense, and individuals seeking Court Ordered Community Service must apply in person by completing an application at the adoption center.

How to become a volunteer
Complete a Volunteer Application online or in person at our Adoption Center.
After submitting your application, schedule and attend your volunteer orientation (walk-ins are not permitted).
Once orientation is complete, you can set your own schedule and begin volunteering independently.
Dog walking
Did you know that EHS is open to the public for dog walking? During regular business hours, EHS welcomes local residence to come into the adoption center and take a dog for a walk in the adjacent park. Walks are limited to 30 minutes depending on the weather and walkers must be over 18 with a valid ID. The public walking program is a great way to get some exercise while having a great time and helping a homeless pet.
Transport Drivers
The Ellensburg Humane Society is proud to partner with over 100 Pet Partners, enabling us to rescue and rehome thousands of homeless pets each year. Volunteer Transport Drivers play a crucial role in our transfer program, helping relocate hundreds of animals to their forever homes. We also cover the cost of fuel used during transportation, making it easier for volunteers to contribute.
Volunteer Transporter Requirements:
Minimum age of 21 years
Reliable transportation
Valid driver’s license
